Manal Alsharif, a Saudi female in her early thirties, drove her car today, 21 May 2011 in Khobar, Saudi. Manal carries her own valid driver's license. She was accompanied by her brother, sister in law and both her children and her brother's. She was stopped by the traffic police for driving in Saudi as a female. While there is no legislation that prohibits women from driving in Saudi, females are banned by religious police from driving. The traffic police with the aid of the religious police she were able to escort Manal and her brother to the police station, where she was then referred to criminal investigation and finally detained at the traffic police station. The sister in law and children drove back home in a taxi.
